Mental Health
An evidence-based branch of behaviour analysis called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a very effective way to explore and support your child or young person’s mental health. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a form of behaviour therapy which was developed by clinical psychologist Dr Steven Hayes. It combines traditional behaviour strategies with mindfulness and acceptance. The core objective is to build psychological flexibility which is the ability to adapt to difficult experiences. Psychological flexibility can reduce burnout and build a person’s resilience. Rather than traditional CBT, which aims to change negative thoughts, ACT aims to teach a person how to accept negative thoughts. Learning how to live a life that is true to their own set of values despite having negative thoughts teaches a person how to detach their feelings from their actions. We can all feel a bit anxious, frustrated or out of control while also engaging in our hobbies, spending time with loved ones and doing the things we love. Rather than waiting for these negative feelings to dissipate before living our best life, let’s live life to the fullest while building resilience and learning coping mechanisms that help us stay present and in the moment. ACT is commonly used to help treat and manage:
· Anxiety disorders
· Phobias
· Addiction
· Mood disorders
· Trauma
· OCD
· Chronic pain
· Eating disorders
· Stress
· School avoidance
· Parental separation
· Grief
